This CD contains the Mozart concerto n° 4 recorded in Berlin in April 1951 with the RIAS orchestra, and an unissued recording made during a public concert in Berne in October 1968, in which Menuhin plays the Bach Partita n° 2 for solo violin.

This album is a sort of tribute to the great French conductor Charles Munch. it contains known recordings that have been rarely reissued, particularly the first one recorded in Boston in 1949 (7th Beehtoven) and Beethoven's very rare Menuet of Congratulation recorded on 78 rpms but never reissued on LP or on CD. Lastly, a previously unissued recording with a rehearsal of the Tchaikovsky violin concerto with Michelle Auclair.

We continue our series of previously unissued recordings with the great German «Kapellmeister» Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt conducting his NDR orchestra of Hamburg, with this Beethoven Ninth symphony of December 1951. The interest of this set lies also in the presence of the great Swedish soprano, Birgit Nilsson, who was only 33 years old.

In this set Scherchen conducts works by Grieg and Bizet: Grieg's Holberg suite (only known recording) and the stage music that Grieg wrote for Ibsen's play Peer Gynt (version without speaker). Two versions of Bizet's Arlésienne: one recorded in Vienna, with a speaker, and the other recorded in Germany, with the orchestral suites 1 and 2.

This CD is a tribute to Leo Borchard who was the first musical director of the Berlin Philharmonic after the downfall of the Nazi regime but who, after only 22 concerts, was accidentally shot dead by a wild bullet in Berlin in August 1945.
This pupil of Scherchen was also part of the group of German resistance called «Onkel Emil». The recordings in this CD contain two first ever issues, i.e. the first known recordings of the Berlin Philharmonic after the war.
