W.A. MOZART
Requiem, KV 626 for soloists, choir and orchestra
Soloists: Phyllis Curtin, Florence Kopleff, Blake Stern, Mac Morgan - Tanglewood Choir
Boston Symphony Orchestra
Recorded Live at the Berkshire Music Festival de Tanglewoodon 22 July 1962

This recording is a true first issue and is published here for two reasons: there is no known sound recording and Munch never recorded it commercially for RCA. It is rather surprising to find Munch in this particular repertoire but it is not astonishing to find some beethovenian accents in this performance of the Mozart Requiem. Munch chose for this work a subjective point of view of human drama and under his baton, this Requiem unfolds itself as an exceptional and even religious event, but not in a priestly sense: Man faces his questions of what is beyond and he expresses all the anxiety felt.

Deutsche Grammophon made between 1949 and 1961 180 recordings with the Hungarian conductor Ferenc Fricsay, mainly with the Berlin RIAS Orchestra. The four live recordings of the present set are first-time issues and have been recorded in Berlin, Lucerne, Hamburg et Cologne. The most interesting document is the Brahms First symphony with the NDR Orchestra of Hamburg which recalls the famous concert conducted by Furtwängler in October 1951 (with the same « crazy timpanist » !).

After the Telefunken recordings of Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt (Tah 698-700), this is another welcome reissue: several rarities from the famous Capitol label which seem to have disappeared completely. Music lovers have long searched for these rare performances, at last made available. In these recordings we can admire the wonderful playing of the famous Hamburg strings, led by Erich Röhn and Arthur Troester, but also the beauty of the sound of Gerhard Otto’s flute and above all the incredible clarinet playing of Rudolf Irmisch (Waldweben).

On 29 September 1959, he gave a gala concert in the « Grosser Sendersaal » of the Senderfreies in Berlin, on the occasion of the reopening of the recording studio of this radio. The soloists (Maria Stader, Hertha Töpper, Ernst Haefliger and Ivan Sardi), the famous choir of the Cathedral Sankt Hedwig in Berlin and the Radio-Sinfonieorchester gave a magnificent performance of Mozart’s Great Mass KV 42 under Fricsay’s baton. After a series of releases dedicated to the piano, we are starting a series dedicated to the violin along the same lines : edit, as far as possible, previously unissued recordings of high artistic interest. This first set will prove typical with its four first-time releases: Two Mozart concertos with Christian Ferras and Ida Haendel, the Mendelssohn Concerto with Zino Francescatti and the Brahms Concerto with Gioconda de Vito. Furtwängler on tour

Furt 2007 - Furtwängler on tour

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony No. 40, KV 550
Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 4, op. 98
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler
Concert recorded on tour in Wiesbaden on 10.VI.1949 - New Mastering

Furtwängler made quite a number of concert tours, especially with the Berlin Philharmonic (34 before the war and 6 after). So, between 1 and 14 June 1949, Furtwängler took the orchestra on tour through twelve German towns and conducted 14 concerts. The programs included works by Pfitzner, Strauss, Brahms, Mozart and Beethoven. The concert of 10 June in Wiesbaden was recorded by the Hessische Rundfunk under excellent sonic conditions: we are releasing a new mastering of it excluding the excerpts from Palestrina.
Despite their sixty years of age, the original tapes are of excellent quality and the performance of the Brahms Fourth is considered by many music lovers as the best one of the great Furtwängler.

ORCHESTRE NATIONAL DE FRANCE
All these recordings were recorded live during concerts at Théâtre des Champs Elysées de Paris

The Orchestre National de France was founded on 18 February 1934. D.E. Inghelbrecht conducted on that occasion a marathon programme. During ist history quite a number of musical directors succeeded each other (Roger Desormière, Eugène Bigot, Manuel Rosenthal, Maurice Le Roux, Jean Martinon, Lorin Maazel, Sergiu Celibidache, Kurt Masur and more). On the other hand, a policy of inviting guest conductors was rapidly introduced (Klemperer, Schuricht, Walter, Horenstein, Argenta, Jochum, Bernstein, etc.).
The present live recordings of this set are quite rare: an Eroica by Kubelik, a Brahms First by Stokovski, etc. This set will followed by others dedicated to this orchestra.

W.A. Mozart: Requiem, KV 626 in D minor
Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Czech Choir conducted by Karel Ancerl - Soloists: Agnes Giebel (Soprano), Vera Soukoupova (alto), Georg Jelden (tenor), Heinz Rehfuss (bass)
Stereo recording made at the Montreux Festival on 14.IX.1966

On 11 April 2008 Karel Ancerl would have been 100 old. For his centenary we have released this previously unissued Mozart Requiem recorded at the Montreux Festival in 1966. Ancerl is backed up by famous international soloists and the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.
One day he declared that the composer he loved most Mozart, but he never recorded his Requiem for his official discographic label Supraphon. Besides, it is the only known existing sound document of this Requiem since the Mozart Requiem he conducted in concert in Toronto in 1973 hadn't been recorded by the Canadian Radio.
