Tah 714/715 - Previously unissued recordings of Paul van Kempen

CD I: J. Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2, in B flat major- Orchestre National de France, Wilhelm Kempff (piano) - Public recording of the Besançon Festival on 1.IX.1955 - P. Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet, overture-fantasy - Concertgebouworkest (17 & 18.VII.1951)
CD II: G. Mahler: Symphony Bo. 1, Titan, in D major - Orchestra di Torino della RAI - Public recording made on 20.V.1955

In his native country, the Netherlands, Paul van Kempen is mainly remembered for the « van Kempen affair », a demonstration against his alleged compromising role during WW II. His discography was determined by the record companies: so, the fledging Philips label was producing a catalogue of standard works. If the DGG recording of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos with Wilhelm Kempff and the Berlin Philharmonic is famous, there are significant gaps in his discography when it comes to Mahler and Brahms. That’s why the performance of Mahler’s First Symphony with the RAI Orchestra of Turin is a welcome addition and a unique document, as well as the Second Brahms Piano Concerto with Kempff, in a compelling performance.

Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam - Public stereo recording of 4.XII.1986 under Eugen Jochum

Amsterdam, 4 December 1986. Eugen Jochum , aged 84 conducts his penultimate concert with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. The programme includes Anton Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony, a gigantic musical cathedral and a masterpiece of counterpoint. The press wrote: «Everything is prayer, everything is contemplation, everything is a state of grace. With this concert the gigantic Eugen Jochum leaves us his final musical testament in the form of a symphony in which he always excelled».
We released this recording for the first time in 1997; it won the Cannes Classical Award at Midem in 1999.

Press review

In Memoriam Hermann Abendroth (1883-1956)

Tah 604/605 - In Memoriam Hermann Abendroth (1883-1956)

Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 (Sinfonie-Orchester des Berliner Rundfunks - Live recording at the Metropol Theater in Berlin, on 19.II.1956) - Tchaikowsky : Suite No. 3 (Theme and Variations) (Sinfonie-Orchester des Leipziger Rundfunks - Studio recording made on 20.III.1951) - Tchaikowsky: Symphony No. 6, Pathétique (Sinfonie-Orchester des Berliner Rundfunks - Live recording made on 28.XI.1950) - Previously unissued recordings
50 years ago the great German conductor Hermann Abendroth that the Germans often call the « other Furtwängler » passed away. To celebrate this anniversary we are releasing three previously unissued recordings stemming from the archives of East German ex-Radio: a magnificent Bruckner 7th and two works by Tchaikowsky (an excerpt of the 3rd suite and excellent performance of the Pathétique where the 3rd movement is a true concerto for timpani and orchestra!). It depicts the main characteristics of Abendroth’s art of conducting with all the «pleasures of excess».

Bruckner: Symphony No. 8 (Live NRU recording of 21.IV.1955 [Pyral]) - Mahler: Symphony No. 6 (Live recording of 7.XII.1955) - Concertgebouw Amsterdam Orkest
The main interest of this album resides in Mahler's Sixth Symphony. This public recording is the only document with Eduard van Beinum conducting this work; in fact van Beinum even only conducted it this one time. The Bruckner Eighth is almost contemporary of the official version that Philips recorded in June 1955. In both cases, van Beinum is conducting the famous Concertgebouw Orkest of Amsterdam, after having succeeded the legendary Mengelberg who presided over the destiny of this orchestra for fifty years and turned it into an orchestra of worldwide renown and known for its great Mahler tradition.

Schubert: Symphony Unfinished - Bruckner: Symphony No. 8 - Brahms: Deutsches Requiem (Elisabeth Grümmer, Soprano and Otto Wiener, Tenor - NDR Sinfonieorchester - Carl Schuricht
Although he lived to be 87, Carl Schuricht didn't leave a vast commercial discography. On the other hand, there are many Live recordings in various European radio archives, mainly German and Swiss. That's the case of the present three recordings, coming from the NDR Hamburg and released for the first time: Schubert's Unfinished, Bruckner's Eighth Symphony and Brahms' Deutsches Requiem with Elisabeth Grümmer and Otto Wiener.

Unissued recordings Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt: Haydn, Paganini, Bruckner

Tah 568/569 - Unissued recordings Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt: Haydn, Paganini, Bruckner

Pachelbel: Canon and Gigue - Haydn : Symphony No. 103 - Paganini : Violin Concerto No. 1 - Bruckner : Symphony No. 9 - Das NWDR Sinfonieorchester - Violin: Christian Ferras - Direction: Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt (Jewelbox)
Even though he is doesn't really rank among the "mythical" conductors of the Twentieth century, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt remains a conductor to be rediscovered. The present set contains only previously unissued recordings and is a perfect example of his conducting. He conducts the NWDR Sinfonieorchester that he created right after the war, on request by the British occupational forces (the first very concert with this orchestra was given on November 1 1945). Next to Haydn, the set contains a very "symphonic" performance of Pachelbel's canon which is at many years' distance from the more modern baroque versions, a Paganini concerto with the great French virtuoso Christian Ferras and a very beautiful Bruckner Ninth.

Furtwängler « revisited » : Tchaikovsky, Bruckner, Schumann

Furt 1099/1100 - Furtwängler « revisited » : Tchaikovsky, Bruckner, Schumann

CD 1: Piotr Tchaikovsky: Symphony no. 6, « Pathétique » (Berliner Philharmoniker - His Master's Voice recording, 25-27.X.1938) - Anton Bruckner: Symphony no. 7, Adagio (berliner Philharmoniker - enregistrement Telefunken, 1.IV.1942)
CD 2: Piotr Tchaikovsky : Symphony no. 4 (Wiener Philharmoniker - His Master's Voice recording, 4-16.I.1951) - Robert Schumann : Symphony no. 4 (Berliner Philharmoniker - Deutsche Grammophon recording, 14.V.1953)

Most of these recordings were reissued in the past in a rather average sound doing no justice to the typical "Furtwängler sound". Since they also were very difficult to find, we thought that it was a good idea to make them available again to music lovers and collectors. Extensive restoration was undertaken in order to respect the fullness and richness of the Furtwängler orchestral sound, without affecting either the basses or the high pitches and above all the harmonics: in a way we deem having been able to restore the famous dynamics of Furtwängler, mainly in his Schumann Fourth which remains undoubtedly one of the most famous recordings of the Twentieth century (which of course didn't prevent an anti-Furtwänglerian to speak of his "rural style"!)

Furt 1098 - Wilhelm Furtwängler in Roma : Bruckner, Symphony No. 7

Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 7, in e (Berliner Philharmoniker, Live, I.V.1951 in Rome – Live recording made on acetates)

In May 1951, Furtwängler made a concert tour to Italy with the Berlin Philharmonic: On 1 May he gave a concert in Rome: on the programme also the Bruckner 7th that the Italian Radio recorded on acetates.
In a TV programme of 1989, the great Lucchino Visconti said that this concert had on him the effect of «lightening», and that by listening to this symphony he cast the first shell idea of what was to become one of his great masterpieces, the film «Senso» made in 1954, and the sound column of which comes from this symphony.
We restored the concert's acetates with greatest care. The concert certainly is Furtwängler's best performance of this very work, in any case superior to the concert he gave while on tour through Egypt.
